“They are all over the town,” Phelan says.

In June 2000, Phelan became a regular sight on the streets of the neighborhood, holding weekly prayer meetings at a church located on West 29th Street. He would walk home from the Church, and later, to work in his house, to deliver his weekly sermon.

“I was pretty much living like a monk for six years,” he says.

He says that after receiving his diagnosis, which was in 1998, it wasn’t until 2009 that he received a diagnosis of ALS. He says the first diagnosis was not severe enough for doctors to prescribe drugs that could be used to treat ALS, since the disease was already severe enough that it was not a treatment option.

“It was quite emotional to finally be diagnosed,” Phelan says. “I thought for sure, if I couldn’t get a medicine or treatment out of this, maybe I could at least do whatever this is. And it turned out to not be that bad, actually.”

Despite having been hospitalized as a result of his treatment, he is a man who has a sense of humor, and even jokes about having 오피스 타ALS. He even gets along with patients and is a good neighbor.

“It was the funniest story of all,” he says. “I couldn’t believe it. I started laughing when I was saying that.”

Despite all of that, despite everything that happened, and even despite everything Phelan was going through, he maintains he can see light at the end of the tunnel.

In December 2012, he told the Los Angeles Times that he will be traveling across the country on the ALS cruise, and hopes that with his new understanding of what ALS is, he can help other people living with the disease.

“I think all it will take is one positive story to change hearts and minds,” Phelan says. “When I’m going somewhere, it can be because the story doesn’t have any negative implications. If the message resonates with a patient, their treatment should continue.”

The world will never be the same as it was with Dr. Phil.

In honor of Phelan and to give him some peace in his own struggles, we’re calling on the ALS cruise company to consider making him a member of the cruise group
